Gold-plated silver jewellery makes a beautiful gift. It looks elegant, feels valuable and can create exactly the kind of “wow” moment we want when gifting someone.

But there is one important detail that is often ignored: How the jewellery will be stored after it is received.

The Gift Box Is Not the Most Important Part

When buying jewellery as a gift, it is natural to think about attractive packaging. Many people immediately imagine a velvet-covered jewellery box because it appears more luxurious than a simple ziplock pouch.

However, the purpose of packaging should not be limited to creating an impression for a few moments. It must also protect the jewellery after the gift has been opened.

Why Can It Tarnish Without Being Worn?

Silver reacts certain chemical pollutants present in the surrounding environment.  Some velvet-lined jewellery boxes may also contain adhesives, dyes, foam and other materials that release reactive fumes. Prolonged exposure to these fumes can contribute to the tarnishing of the silver underneath the gold plating.
